After Divorce – Eat, Pray, Love, Then Marry Again?

– Eat, , , Then ?

Eat, Pray, Love, a bestselling debut book by Elizabeth Gilbert, was a travel journal about the author’s spiritual adventures that helped heal the heartbreak of her divorce. Four million readers who made it the number 1 paperback for a year might recall her resistance to marriage and her plans to remain single.

Are you surprised to learn that Elizabeth Gilbert has married again? Find out her surprising reason for remarriage which she revealed in publicity interviews for her 2nd book, due out in January 2010.

What is Elizabeth Gilbert’s second book?

It’s a memoir that begins 18 months after her first book ends. Published by Viking, it’s titled, Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace With Marriage.

Elizabeth told the New York Times that as research, she examined her deep ambivalence about marriage by reading historical and sociological studies. She also interviewed her family, friends, and people she and her future husband had met during 10-months of travel in Southeast Asia.

In Committed, Elizabeth said she weaves her own reflections on this material into her own experience. So it has more of an academic tone than her first book.

Is it a sequel?

“It is and it isn’t,” Ms. Gilbert says. In Committed, she recounts how she came to marry one of her lovers she had met in Indonesia and had written about in Eat, Pray, Love. Although they are the same two characters, she says that they are in a very different setting and feel from her first book.

Did her research for this new book convince her to marry again?

Elizabeth suggests that an immigration incident became a deciding factor. While returning to the U.S. after a French vacation with her Brazilian-born, Australian businessman boyfriend, he was detained and questioned for hours at the airport.

Then Immigration officials said the simplest way for him to be allowed back into the country was for them to marry.

Are you wondering whether her boyfriend married her for a green card or for true love?

Here are some clues. Neither one of them wanted to remarry after their painful divorces. But they wanted to build a life together in the U.S. near Elizabeth’s family.

While they waited to cut through bureaucratic red tape to allow his re-entry into the U.S., Elizabeth and her boyfriend spent 10 months in exile — traveling, researching and musing on marriage. Elizabeth said that she wanted to gain perspective on marriage and get to a place where it didn’t feel coerced. They married in 2007.

Now readers will have to wait until Committed appears in book stores in January, 2010 to find out how Elizabeth Gilbert made that unexpected journey with her new husband.

And if you’d like to see how author Hadley Finch and her savvy friends create healthy relationships after divorce, you may follow their adventures in the novel, TRIBE OF BLONDES.
